What is it about buttons that make us want to hang on to them...store them in tins like a keepsake or something? When I was a little girl, I loved it when my grandma would take her button "can" off the shelf in her closet and let me go through it. It was like a prized possession, she'd hold up different buttons and tell where they came from.. ~ it was so exciting going through the tin and finding all her little treasures...a ring with the stone missing~grandpa gave her that, and how she cried when she lost the stone~ a baby bracelet~ a watch missing the hands..... grandpa gave her that too when they were "dating"....
a seed package with a pretty flower on it and no seeds....
and her mama's thimble....
I never tired of hearing those stories or running my fingers through those buttons......

ReplyDeleteYears ago I thought I was the only one that had such an obsession with old buttons - I would constantly purchase tins and jars at auctions and spend hours sorting, organizing, admiring them - only to dump them all back into their respective tins/jars. And hoard

When I discovered the internet, I also discovered that I was only one of the many afflicted, which really does lead to the question: What IS it about buttons?
I think it is the history, romance and if known, the stories such as you have told.

I've got a button box. It was my mom's. She got into collecting buttons in the 80's and there are some really great ones in there. She kind of gave up on the whole button collecting thing so she gave them to me. Now I go through them, play with them...er...SORT them. LOL. I love old buttons. Much better than a box full of gold pieces. I guess it's true that one man's trash is another man's treasure. Button Treasure!

My grandmother used to show me her buttons in her tin also and tell me where they came from. I wish I would have paid more attention then. Some of them I know but others????? She gave me that old tin full of buttons and every so often I open it up and look at her buttons and smell the sweet smell of her buttons. I can't use them, they mean too much to me. Thank you for making me remember my grandmas buttons once again.

I love the buttons. I have both my grandmother's and my mother's button tins. There must be at least 10 of them even after I sorted and picked out all the white and black ones. I use the white and black around my home and I decorate lampshades, candles and picture frames with the buttons.

ReplyDeleteAny time I see a button jar for sale I have to snatch it up, then I go home & my daughter & I spend hours going through it piece, by piece. We pick out the prettiest ones, maybe a piece of broken earring, an old buckle. Treasures, all of it! Thanks for sharing yours. Lisa

Ann amor, This is a beautiful post! Aren't grandmas the best! My Ita kept a lil wood box filled with her most favorite lil treasures and she also kept many of her favorite buttons in old glass cold cream containers with pink lids...I remember sneaking into her room to play with her treasures...she never got mad, even when I managed to keep one or 2 or a few lol as my own pretty treasures...Thank you for helping me remember this memory :) besos, Rose

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I have that same button tin. I found mine in a Goodwill store packed FULL of buttons and notions - was $1.99. Unreal! I also have memories of running my hands through my grandma's and Aunt Martha's old button tins. I do love buttons.
